Charleston Collegiate School is partnering with the College of Charleston to host a workshop for Project-based Learning curriculum implementation for educators on November 8th and 9th.
This workshop provides one graduate professional development credit from the College of Charleston’s School of Education, Health and Human Performance Office of Professional Development in Education.
The workshop will include a variety of sessions and a keynote speaker focusing entirely on how to develop, implement and maintain a project-based learning curriculum in secondary schools. This workshop will also focus on how to best benefit students with a project-based learning curriculum.
Charleston Collegiate School is a leader in project-based learning in the Charleston area. Ted Dintersmith, one of America’s leaders in innovation, entrepreneurship, and education, said of his visits to CCS, “As I crossed the country looking for inspiring examples of education at its best, I was dazzled by what I found at Charleston Collegiate School, and highlighted their great work in my book What School Could Be. This is a school preparing its children for life, not for pointless standardized tests. Engaged kids at CCS learn deeply as they develop essential competencies, personal agency, and a guiding sense of purpose. We all have a lot to learn from this remarkable school, which is leading the way for schools across America.”
The goal of this workshop partnership is for participants to understand PBL, become acquainted with ways to design projects and techniques for teaching soft skills, and carry back to their own schools some plans to integrate PBL and make it long lasting and sustainable. Interactive workshop topics will include project design, backward project planning, cross-curricular projects, essential questions, exhibitions, curation, and soft skills.
Keynote speaker, Greg Rayburn, expert in management and former CEO of Hostess, will discuss how to best prepare students for the opportunities and challenges of that await them in our rapidly advancing society.
Three of the workshop presenters will also be presenting some of these topics at the SAIS conference in October. The presentation topics will be Digital Portfolios to Increase Student Reflection and Expanding the Classroom Beyond the Confinement of Walls.
